Curious about what kind of router I should get to be safe with all the vulnerabilities being discovered. I'm thinking something running OpenWRT makes sense, since that's open source and likely to receive updates quickly going forward. Does anyone have any recommendations?

OpenWRT project maintains a list of 'supported' hardware you can choose from. You can also check the OpenWRT forumns for what people are recommending and why.

If you want a bit more power or firewall capability a minipc running OPNSense also works.
You can't even trust the biggest tech companies to reliably ship software updates anymore and they've got more money than god, and the entire industry seems intent on reducing headcount as deeply as possible, killing products and projects however they see fit, ending support in the most abrasive manners possible.
